Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
