Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
