19 of Medvedev's 21 titles have been won on hard surfaces

A resurgent Medvedev won his first trophy for 882 days with success over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

Medvedev, a ex- number one, has experienced a torrid year, winning just one match at the Grand Slams and suffering a setback at the American major.

His varied form on the tennis tour - and struggles with his serve in particular - caused him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally splitting with former mentor Cervara.

Presently training with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has consistently advanced in the last few weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought competitive win over Frenchman Moutet.

This represents Medvedev's maiden title since the Italian tournament and initial on a hard surface since March of that year.

The win also indicates he has achieved 21 titles at 21 different tournaments.

"For the first time I am participating in a event with my children simultaneously, so to get a championship is especially meaningful," commented world number 14 the champion.

"This championship is in tribute of my second daughter her name, because the first title I got when my first daughter Alisa was delivered was for her."

The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his last six finals, including in the German tournament previously this season.

Medvedev's counter-punching play style and recurring emotional displays on court had led observers to question if his capacity to compete at the elite level was finished.

Yet the athlete has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, striving to come to the net and play aggressively, backed up by an improved service.

Medvedev fought back from a deficit in the first set against the difficult opponent, securing four of the final five exchanges to gain the advantage.

Both players exchanged service breaks in the middle set before the challenger, striving for his first professional victory, gained dominance to push for a third set.

He saved four early-game chances in a close deciding set before Medvedev won the break to 15 to close out the victory.

Suitably, the winner clinched victory with a shot at the net area, with his opponent incapable to control a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
